Matteson makes breakthrough in Vegas

Tour rookie Troy Matteson shot a three-under-par 69 and played like a veteran down the stretch to post his first career victory at the Frys.com Open in Las Vegas on Sunday.

Matteson finished his four rounds at 22-under 265 at Summerlin TPC to collect the $720,000 (€776,000) first-place cheque and move from 172nd on the money list to 78th.

Sweden’s Daniel Chopra and Ben Crane tied for second, one shot back. Frank Lickliter II finished third at 267.

After the third round was suspended due to darkness, Matteson finished his round on Sunday morning with two birdies to take a one-shot lead entering the final round.

The 26-year-old played steadily on his final 18 holes before sticking a six-iron approach on number 16. He sank a five-footer for birdie for a one-shot lead over Crane, who was playing one group ahead.

After a par on number 17, Matteson’s excellent approach on the par-four 18th allowed him to two-putt from six feet to secure the victory.

Mansfield golfer Greg Owen was one of eight players tied for 16th at 15-under-par 272 following a final-round 68.
