Harrington loses out to Verplank

Padraig Harrington has lost by 4&3 to Scott Verplank in todeay's Ryder Cup singles matches.

A high-quality match saw the players trade birdies on the first three holes, and share the fifth in birdies as well, before Verplank went two ahead with another birdie on the seventh.

Verplank had been unhappy with playing just once before the singles and he was making his point in style, another birdie on the 12th then followed by a hole-in-one on the 14th – the first ever by an American in the Ryder Cup. The end came on the next hole.
