Monty marches on
Colin Montgomerie has beaten David Toms by just one hole in the Sunday singles on day three at the K Club.
Montgomerie, given the lead role just as he was in 2002, fired in his tee shot to five feet on the third and Toms, beaten on the last when they clashed two years ago, went two down when he bogeyed the long fourth.
The Scot, however, double-bogeyed the next and the gap remained one to the turn with Montgomerie doing well to save par at the ninth after going over the green.
In an amazing piece of luck on the 11th Montgomerie’s pulled approach hit the rock on the edge of the lake, but the ball found dry land and he halved. A four-footer won the short 14th for Montgomerie, but Toms stayed alive with an 18-footer at the 17th.
Bunkered in two at the last Montgomerie splashed out superbly to five feet and made it to the cheers of the crowd. In eight cup appearances he has never lost a singles.
