Plain sailing for Ferrie

England’s Kenneth Ferrie, doubtful on the eve of the US PGA Championship, not just started the event but started it with a birdie at Medinah today.

Ferrie, in his first competitive round since pulling out of the British Open four weeks ago, was having to use a new set of clubs after his own were lost en route to Chicago at the weekend.

He drove into a bunker on the par-five 10th, but hit his third shot to 15 feet and made the birdie putt.

In June, Ferrie shared the lead with Phil Mickelson with a round to play in the US Open, but fell back to sixth and has some making up to do in the Ryder Cup race with only two weeks left.
