He is on seven under par, three shots off the lead jointly held by Austrian Markus Brier and England's Simon Dyson on 10-under.

Gary Emerson and Miguel Angel Jimenez were tied for third on -8, while Higgins was joint fifth with four others including Colin Montgomerie.

The Kerryman followed his opening round of 67 with a 68 yesterday at the BC-CA at Fontana near Vienna.

Meanwhile, Kilkenny’s Gary Murphy was on -4, with Stephen Browne two under and Paul McGinley one over par.
