Stiles storms into lead
Darron Stiles carded a six-under-par 64 to take a two-shot lead after the second round of the St Jude Classic in Memphis.
A one-under 69 left Stiles tied for 12th after the first round and he wasted no time moving up the leaderboard on Friday.
The 32-year-old, a four-time winner on the Nationwide Tour, started his round on the 10th and promptly reeled off three consecutive birdies.
Stiles added birdies on the 15th and 16th for a 30 on his front nine and picked up strokes at the first, sixth and ninth to get to seven under at 133.
He then had a double-bogey at the par-four fifth but immediately responded with a birdie to right the ship.
First-round leader Chris Smith, Tom Pernice Jr and Tim Herron are tied for second at five under on 135.
Smith, who shot a bogey-free 64 to grab the lead on the opening day, had two bogeys and two birdies on his front nine but did not get another coming in to shoot a 71.
In 263 career starts since turning pro in 1991, Smith has claimed just one title, the 2002 Buick Classic, and he has missed the cut in five of eight starts this season, with his best finish a tie for 42nd at last month’s BellSouth Classic.
Pernice had a roller-coaster round of 68 that included five birdies, an eagle, a double-bogey and three bogeys.
Herron, who won last week at Colonial, had seven birdies and a pair of bogeys in a 65.
Two-time winner David Toms is a shot further back after a three-under 67 in the second round.
Brian Gay (67) and rookie Camilo Villegas (66) are tied with Toms for fifth at four under.
