A golf professional who donated his kidney to save the life of a fellow pro will receive a national award at the BMW Championship at Wentworth on Sunday.

Yorkshireman Gary Vickers came to the aid of his coach and former European Tour player Haydn Selby-Green, who will be present to see the Toby Sunderland trophy presented and Vickers given £1,000 for a charity of his choice.

“When you see someone dying in front of you becoming a donor suddenly becomes an easy thing to do,” he said. “Seeing Haydn doing so well and able to enjoy life again with his family gives me a massive lift.”

Haydn-Green, second in the Catalan Open during his tour career, commented: “I haven’t had a bad day since the operation. It’s been a really incredible experience.”
