Fine Gael TD Jimmy Deenihan has called on the Government to ensure this year's Ryder Cup competition is broadcast on free-to-air television in Ireland.

Sky currently owns the broadcasting rights to the prestigious tournament, which is being held at the K Club in Co Kildare in September.

However, Communications Minister Noel Dempsey is considering adding the competition to a list of nationally important events that can be made available on free-to-air television.

Mr Deenihan said today that the minister should do so as the Ryder Cup was one of the most significant tournaments ever to be held in Ireland.
