When Ernie Els overtook Colin Montgomerie as the biggest money-winner in European tour history a year ago it appeared to be the end of an era.

Els, the younger by seven years, had hopes of toppling Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh at the top of the world rankings, while the Scot had fallen outside of Europe’s top 20 and the world’s top 80.
