McElhinney heads Irish team for European Championship

Brian McElhinney, winner of the British Amateur Championship at Royal Birkdale last weekend heads Ireland’s team for the European Team Championship which will be played over the Hillside course in Southport, England, from June 28 to July 2.

Brian McElhinney, winner of the British Amateur Championship at Royal Birkdale last weekend heads Ireland’s team for the European Team Championship which will be played over the Hillside course in Southport, England, from June 28 to July 2.

Jim Carvill (Warrenpoint), recently reinstated to the amateur ranks after a spell in the professional ranks, and winner of last weekend’s East of Ireland Championship at Co Louth Golf Club, is also included.

The six-man team includes Darren Crowe (Dunmurry), Michael McGeady (North West), Rory McIlroy (Holywood) and Sean McTernan (Co. Sligo).

Richard Kilpatrick (Banbridge) is the non-travelling reserve while team captain is Mark Gannon.

The Youths team selected to represent Ireland in the annual match against Scotland at Portumna Golf Club on Wednesday June 22 is: Keith Crowley (Lee Valley), Nicholas Grant (Clandeboye), Rory McIlroy (Holywood), Cian McNamara (Limerick), Aaron O’Callaghan (Douglas) and Gareth Shaw (Lurgan). Michael Burns is the non-playing team captain.
