Michelle still has Wie chance of making US Open
Fifteen-year-old Michelle Wie still has a chance to qualify for next month’s US Open – but only a very slim one.
Wie shot a four over par 76 in one of 107 local qualifying competitions, finishing in a three-way tie for sixth which, in rather bizarre circumstances, made her the second alternate for final qualifying in a few weeks’ time.
A play-off between Wie, Andrew Feldmann and Norman Asao was not held because neither man was at the Turtle Bay course when the day’s play ended.
Stephen Perry of the United States Golf Association declared that with Wie the only player there she received the reserve spot.
“Hopefully a couple of people will break their legs and I’ll get in,” said Wie, who had recovered from playing the front nine in a five over 41.
Wie is also trying to qualify for the British Open Championship this year. She has been invited to compete at the US Tour’s John Deere Classic, where the leading non-exempt player gets into the St Andrews field.
