Eagle puts Wiratchant in charge

An eagle three for Thaworn Wiratchant on his last hole gave him the clubhouse lead on 14 under at the Indonesia Open in Jakarta.

The Thai overtook Belgium’s Nicolas Colsaerts, who had carded a 62 to initially top the leaderboard at 13 under, as a result of gaining those two strokes at the ninth hole – his 18th of the day.

Starting on the back nine at seven under Wiratchant had birdies at the 11th and 18th with his only dropped shot coming at the 477-yard 14th.

However, he raised his game and birdies at the second, third, fifth and eighth were then surpassed by an eagle at the 524-yard par-five as he covered the closing nine in only 30 for a second successive round of 63.

Ireland’s Paul McGinley had to play 23 holes in the day after yesterday’s round was halted at the 13th because of a lightning storm and he probably suffered from the quick turnaround.

Resuming on one under he finished with five straight pars and then, starting at the 10th, went out for his second round.

A birdie at the 11th was immediately followed by a bogey four at the 245-yard next and the two-time Ryder Cup winner dropped further shots at the 15th and 16th.

The 178-yard 17th provided some welcome relief with a birdie and further strokes were claimed back at the third, fourth and sixth as the Dubliner carded a 69 to be three under for the tournament.

That was level with Colin Montgomerie, who needs to win the event to re-enter the world’s top 50 and gain qualification for next month’s Masters, who has yet to start his second round.

Yesterday’s surprise joint leader Michael Hoey, the 2001 British Amateur champion, was another yet to tee off as he looks to improve on yesterday’s eight-under round of 62.
