Rose falls five behind

Justin Rose tumbled into a tie for eighth place, five shots behind leader Shigeki Maruyama, after a disappointing two-over-par 72 in the third round of the Sony Open in Hawaii.

The 24-year-old had 11 birdies in his first two rounds at the Waialae Country Club and started the day just one shot behind Maruyama.

But a sole birdie, at the par-five 18th, and dropped shots at the 6th, 13th and short 17th saw Rose slip down the leaderboard.

Japanese star Maruyama, helped by a hole-in-one at the fourth, carded two-under 68 on another day of testing breezes.

He is at 10-under 200 with one round left. Brett Quigley (68) is one shot behind, Paul Azinger (67) trails by two and Larry Mize (64) and Robert Gamez (68) are three back.

World number one Vijay Singh is not completely out of the running, four shots back after a 67, although he was a disappointing one over for the final eight holes.
