South African Charl Schwartzel claimed his first European Tour victory on Sunday when he won the Dunhill Championship with a birdie on the first play-off hole.

South African Charl Schwartzel claimed his first European Tour victory on Sunday when he won the Dunhill Championship with a birdie on the first play-off hole.

The 20-year-old beat off a strong challenge from England’s Neil Cheetham after both players tied after 72 holes.

Cheetham misses his birdie putt to the left of the par 5 18th in the play-off, but Schwartzel holed his attempt for victory.

Damien McGrane was best of the Irish, finishing tied for eighth place four under after shooting a 70 today.

Peter Lawrie shot a 74 to finish on three over while Stephen Browne was a shot further back after a 69 today.
