Tunnicliff in Valderrama horror show

England’s Miles Tunnicliff did not have to wait until Valderrama’s dreaded 17th for his nightmare at the Volvo Masters today.

After taking nine and eight on the notorious par five where Darren Clarke ran up an 11 when leading yesterday, Tunnicliff resumed on nine over par.

But by the eighth tee he was up to 17 over and last of the 54 players by four strokes.

The Malaga-based player had double bogeys at the first and long fourth and bogeys at the second, fifth, sixth and seventh in a horror start.

He was not alone in hitting trouble early on, though. Swede Henrik Stenson took eight on the 421-yard second and stood 12 over.

Tunnicliff needed a birdie on the ninth just to turn in a seven over 42 - 10 more than Argentina's Eduardo Romero, though that merely moved the 50-year-old from 12 over to nine over.

Colin Montgomerie had birdies at the fourth and fifth, but was still deep in the pack at five over.
