Big Easy relishing playing at 'home'

Ernie Els is relishing the prospect of playing his “home” course at Wentworth this week in the HSBC World Matchplay Championship.

The South African is a five-time winner of the event and has a house near the West course. “It’s always nice to get back to the house at Wentworth for this particular week of the year,” he said.

“I get to play in one of my favourite tournaments of the year, the HSBC World Matchplay Championship, and I haven’t even got to travel anywhere.

“No long flights, no time zone change. Just sleep in my own bed and wake up every morning to play a great golf course located at the bottom of my garden. Wonderful!”

Els, who faces Scott Drummond in tomorrow’s first round, has been encouraged by his recent form, particularly his driving.

“Every golfer knows what a huge plus it is if you’re driving the ball well,” he told his official website www.ernieels.com.

“It just sets you up to be able to attack the pins with your second shots. That’s really got to be your game plan in matchplay. You’ve usually got to make a ton of birdies in this game… or it’s game over!

“In years gone by I’ve been seeded, which means I’d never have to play on a Thursday, instead getting a bye into Friday’s second round.

“That’s always been a slight advantage come the weekend, simply because you’re a little bit fresher than the guy you’re playing against who has maybe had to play an extra 36 holes. Not this year, though. Everyone starts on the same day, Thursday.”
