Lyle interested in Ryder Cup captaincy

Former British Open champion Sandy Lyle has thrown his hat into the ring for the captaincy of the next European Ryder Cup team.

Bernhard Langer is widely expected to step down after his successful tournament in charge where Europe defeated the USA by a record 18 1/2 to 9 1/2 at Oakland Hills.

Cup hero Colin Montgomerie is tipped as a possible successor along with Thomas Bjorn but Lyle admits he would love to take on the role if he were asked.

He told Scotland Today: “Thomas Bjorn is a possibility although he is still playing serious golf at the moment. “He would be a good captain and has helped out Langer as vice-captain as well.

“There are a lot of European players who could be Ryder Cup captains.

“But my name could be in the ‘tumbler’ to be drawn out – I don’t know how it is decided – it is all down to the committee and what they want from their captain.”
