Harrington goes haywire

From play-off to way off; it was all a bit of a comedown for Padraig Harrington at the United States Open this week.

Seven days after taking Sergio Garcia into sudden death at the Buick Classic - and recording the 23rd runners-up finish of his career – Harrington went to the turn in 40 in his final round at Shinnecock Hills.

It put the Dubliner 14 over par and joint 57th of the 66 players. He was 19 adrift of leader Retief Goosen.

Yet there were far worse scores than that 40.

Billy Mayfair covered the front nine in an horrific 47 – and that despite getting out of the diabolical seventh hole with only a bogey before officials started to water it – and with five to play was already 16 over for the day.

Fellow American Cliff Kresge was out in 45 – and JJ Henry, who shot 86 yesterday partnering Harrington, turned in 43.

Phillip Price, eight over overnight, bogeyed four of his first seven holes - and Lee Westwood, resuming on seven over, two of the first four.
