Hatalsky closes the gap

Morris Hatalsky fired a five-under-par 66 to catch Tom Purtzer for the lead at the Toshiba Senior Classic in California.

Hatalsky shot a fine 65 in Friday’s opening round but that was obscured by Purtzer’s 60 which matched a Champions Tour record.

However, Purtzer found the Newport Beach course a bit more challenging as he struggled to a level-par 71.

He gave away a four-shot lead, the biggest 18-hole advantage since Allen Doyle built a four-stroke cushion at the 2000 Senior Tour Championship.

Both players are on 11 under at 131, one stroke clear of Keith Fergus (66) and John Jacobs (65).

DA Weibring, who also fired a 65, is three shots off the pace, with Bruce Fleisher, former European Ryder Cup captain Sam Torrance and Dave Eger a further stroke behind.
