Weir and Maruyama head leaderboard

Mike Weir and Shigeki Maruyama share the lead after two rounds of the Nissan Open in California.

Weir took the lead early on with a seven-under-par 64 that took him to 12 under on 130 but Maruyama caught him with a 66 that included seven birdies and a double-bogey.

The pair’s 36-hole total matches the course record set by Davis Love III.

“This course definitely sets up as one of the better ones for me,” said Canadian Weir. “Any golf course that you have to work the ball both ways, like Augusta, works for me.

“I’m not going to rip it out there 320 yards. I have to find different ways to get it close to the hole, and that’s working the ball both ways.”

Maruyama played later, catching the bulk of the rain that fell.

“I try to get warm on my shoulder and my neck,” Maruyama said. “Cold weather is OK, but rain affects my neck and shoulder badly.

“So I try to care for my body very carefully and hopefully have a good score on the weekend.”

Briny Baird carded the day’s low round – a bogey-free nine-under 62 that moved him into a tie for third with Scott McCarron (65).

John Daly improved on Thursday’s 68 by four strokes, leaving him two shots back at 10 under on 132.

Tiger Woods fired a five-under 66 – ensuring he made his 117th consecutive cut and extending the PGA Tour record.
