Hanell can handle Hong Kong

Sweden’s Christopher Hanell emerged as the new leader of the Omega Hong Kong Open on eight-under-par after a dramatic third day in Fanling.

The 30-year-old, who ranked just 41st on the Challenger Tour, did not drop a shot in an impressive five-under-par round of 65.

But it was not until the final two holes of the day that he found himself alone at the top of the leaderboard, as his four nearest rivals all bogeyed the tough 18th, where the pin was tucked in behind a bunker.

It cost Ireland’s Padraig Harrington and Prayad Marksaeng of Thailand the chance to share the overnight lead. Both will start their final round on seven-under-par.

“I feel I have missed a bit of an opportunity,” reflected Harrington.

“I could be two or three better.”

McEvoy endured a disastrous day, shooting a four-over-par 74 to slump from 10-under-par to sit level with defending champion Fredrik Jacobson on six under, alongside England’s Chris Gane and American Rob Rashell.
