Westwood reeling after dreadful start

Lee Westwood, seeking a third win in eight weeks, is battling to recover from a terrible start to his opening round in the Turespana Majorca Classic.

Westwood ran up a double-bogey seven on the 10th, his opening hole after a 30-minute delay following torrential rain overnight and earlier in the week which left parts of the course at Pula Golf Club under water.

The 30-year-old had to hit three balls off the tee because he thought his first two had been pulled out of bounds, but after finding his first ball in an unplayable lie he had to take two penalty drops to get out of trouble.

His fourth shot was then played from a cart path and after eventually finding the green the former European number one two-putted for a seven.

He quickly repaired some of the damage with a birdie from 12 feet on the next and picked up another birdie on the 14th, but also dropped shots at the 13th and 15th to lie two over par.

Both he and playing partner Jose Maria Olazabal then came up short of the green on the par-three 18th as the wind began to strengthen but the pair managed to save par.

The duo then missed good chances to birdie the first from 10 feet, leaving Westwood two over and Olazabal two under par.

Michael Jonzon was setting the early pace, the Swede racing to the turn in just 30 shots to lie five under par, three shots clear of the field.
