Price not right for final major

Nick Price heads a trio of major winners to have withdrawn from the PGA Championship which gets underway on August 14.

Price has confirmed he won’t be at the Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York to play the final major of the year, and has been joined on the absent list by Nick Faldo and Ian Woosnam.

Price, who won the event in 1992 and 1994, has pulled out in order to spend more time with his family.

The Zimbabwean last missed the PGA Championship in 1991 as his wife was due to give birth to their youngest child.

A new baby also caused Faldo to withdraw, bringing to an end his long run of participating in Major events.

“Having taken part in 65 consecutive major championships this was obviously a tough decision to make bringing with it mixed emotions,” Faldo said.

“This is an incredibly special time in my life becoming a dad again at 46, and I promised Valerie that I would be around to support her and our new daughter.”

Woosnam will miss the tournament due to the death of his father on July 27.

The Welshman, the 1991 Masters champion, pulled out of last week’s Scandinavian Masters and decided he is still not fit to compete with the world’s best.
