Dwyer wins in Ashbourne as rain stops play

Rain has stopped play in the second round of the €70,000 Quinn Direct PGA Charity Trophy event at Slieve Russell in Co Cavan with today's second round abandoned and the overnight scores to stand as the final result.

That leaves Ashbourne club professional John Dwyer as the winner.

He was the only player to break par yesterday with an opening round of 71 - one-under. Dwyer collects a cheque for €10,000.

In joint second place are Waterville's David Higgins, Wexford Club pro Damian McGrane, Gary Murphy from Kilkenny, Ballyliffin pro Francis Howley and Finian Dwyer from Celbridge.

"We had no option but to abandon play as the news was that the heavy rain would cease around lunchtime but there would be showers in the afternoon. The course would not be playable until tomorrow," explained PGA Irish Region secretary Michael McCumiskey.
