Johnson breaks course record

Sweden’s Richard Johnson broke The Belfry course record with a 64 on the last-ever day of the Benson and Hedges International Open today.

The 26-year-old from Stockholm turned in 32, then holed a 30-foot eagle putt on the driveable par four 10th, added further birdies at the 13th and 14th and finished with a 12-foot par putt.

It broke the previous record of 65 held by Barry Lane and Adam Scott, although Padraig Harrington had a 64 in the third round in 2000, but then had it scrubbed out when he was disqualified the following day for not signing his first round scorecard.

Johnson, who moved from four over par to four under, said: “The putter seems to have been on fire all day and it was an awesome feeling to shoot a round like that.

“It was crazy. It’s not easy out there, there’s a lot of wind.”

Joint leaders with a round to go were Harrington, Surrey’s Paul Casey and New Zealander Stephen Scahill on 10 under. Defending champion Angel Cabrera was a stroke behind.
