Schoolboy error from Martin

Seventeen-year-old amateur Pablo Martin moved into the outright lead at the start of the final round of the Canaries Spanish Open today – then crashed to a triple bogey seven.

The Malaga schoolboy, bidding to become the first amateur winner on the European tour and the youngest-ever champion, was the only one of the six overnight leaders to birdie the 539-yard first in the windy conditions at Costa Adeje in Tenerife.

But on the 459-yard fourth, after he had been joined out in front by England’s Paul Casey and fellow Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez, he hit his second shot into a hazard, then three-putted to drop from 20 under par to 17 under.

Casey’s bogey at the sixth then left Jimenez, out in 32, in top spot. He had started the day in 14th spot.
