Darkness halts play-off
A play-off between Scott Hoch and Jim Furyk at the Ford Championship on Sunday was halted by darkness.
Hoch refused to putt at the second extra hole and Furyk also declined, much to the chagrin of the gallery at the Doral Resort’s Blue Monster course.
Both players had good birdie chances after they had tied the lead at 17-under-par 271, but Hoch said it was simply too dark to read the line.
“I’d rather putt on what I see than what I think,” he said as fans booed loudly, angry they would not get to see a result.
“My eyes aren’t the greatest when it gets dark like this. There’s too much riding on this to be playing a shot on guesswork.”
Furyk was willing to continue, but there was no point after Hoch refused.
“It was Scott’s putt first,” Furyk said. “He made the call. I was willing to go either way.”
Play will resume at 8am today in Miami (1pm Irish time).
