Seve not tempted by return
European tour executive director Ken Schofield has emphasised that “strong efforts” were made to bring Seve Ballesteros to this week’s Ryder Cup.
Ballesteros, captain in 1997 and a central character in eight matches before that, has declined the invitation and said in a BBC interview from his home in Santander: “I have nothing to do - I am not the captain or vice-captain.
“I hope people understand. The Ryder Cup has always been a fantastic tournament and very special for me. It’s always been played with a lot of passion.
“As I was last time, I will be watching.”
As many past players and captains as possible have gathered at The Belfry and they were being honoured at today’s opening ceremony.
Schofield, asked to comment on the possibility that Ballesteros does not feel he is wanted at the event, answered: “Possibly Seve is the only man who could come to that conclusion.
“The response from former players has been superb. Over 50 are present from both sides of the Atlantic.”
