Sweden’s Robert Karlsson received the Omega European Masters trophy from supermodel Cindy Crawford in Switzerland today.

The 33-year-old won by four strokes in the end after trailing Barry Lane by one with 11 holes to play.

Lane, winner of the title in 1993, had three bogeys in a row around the turn and then lost a ball in a tree for a quadruple bogey seven at the short 16th - despite the efforts of a European tour caddie, who clambered up to try to find it.

The other main challenger was Scotland’s Paul Lawrie, but he went into a lake on the long 14th when only two behind and had two more bogeys after that.

That enabled Karlsson to cruise to the £158,407 first prize. He could even bogey the last two holes to finish with a 71 for a 14 under par total of 269.

Lawrie finished joint second with South African Trevor Immelman, with Wales’ Bradley Dredge and Yorkshireman Simon Dyson one further back.
