McGovern gets win number 10 at Shannon
Brendan McGovern chalked up his tenth win of the season when he topped the leaderboard after the 36-holes €23,000 Shell-backed Dr William Flynn Memorial pro-am tournament at Shannon.
McGovern, winner of the PGA Southern Branch Championship at Arklow last June, leaped from joint second place overnight to post a two-under-par 70 for a three-under total of 141 and a one-stroke lead over Damian Mooney from Laganview.
Headfort professional McGovern turned in one-under-par 37 after birdies at the third and sixth holes and a bogey five at the ninth.
He was back to regulation for the day when he missed the green at the short 12th but then pencilled in back-to-back birdies at the 13th and 14th holes, both par four.
He then swapped bogey at the par four 15th for birdie at the short 17th to come home in one-under (33).
Overnight leader David Ryan from the Cork Club at Little Island slipped down the leaderboard to joint third place.
The former Irish Assistants' Champion, after his opening 71, carded a 74 second time out.
For the second year running at Shannon, Wexford pro Damian McGrane led in the winning team. He dovetailed perfectly with amateurs Tom Reidy (11), Joe McGrath (13) and Kevin Twomey (18) to post 190 points over the two rounds - 98 points in the second round.
