Ryder Cup Dubliner Paul McGinley will not be playing the Murphy’s Irish Open in Cork next week.

McGinley, who has just had a week off after missing the halfway cut in the United States Open, has given the reason for his decision as ‘‘exhaustion and loss of form.’’

The 35-year-old, who has missed the cut in three of his last five starts and at the Benson and Hedges International last month had a round of 81, said in New York that his dip in form had taken him by surprise.

It is the first time in his 11-year professional career that McGinley has missed his national championship.
