Golf: Woosnam handed award

Ian Woosnam is the European tour's Asprey and Garrard Golfer of the Month for October.

Ian Woosnam is the European tour's Asprey and Garrard Golfer of the Month for October.

He won the Cisco World Match Play at Wentworth by beating Order of Merit winner Retief Goosen, seven-time European number one Colin Montgomerie, defending champion Lee Westwood and then Padraig Harrington in a memorable final.

Woosnam, becoming the oldest winner in the event's history and the first to capture the title in three different decades, had seven successive birdies in going to the turn in 29 in the first round of the final.

But Harrington covered the par 37 back nine in 30 for a round of 62 and with 12 holes to play led by three before Woosnam staged a thrilling fightback to triumph two and one.

The monthly award earns a £1,000 donation of the Golf Foundation.

Woosnam was the unanimous choice of a panel ahead of Linde German Masters winner Bernhard Langer, Argentina's Jose Coceres, who had his second victory on the European tour, Scot Paul Lawrie, who captured the Dunhill Links title with a dramatic 40-foot putt from the Valley of Sin at St Andrews, and Goosen, whose Madrid Open victory clinched the money list crown.
