South Africa’s Retief Goosen has won the Telefonica Madrid Open in Spain after beating England’s Steve Webster on the third play-off hole yesterday evening.

The two players had finished on 20 under par, but Goosen birdied the third extra hole to claim victory.

Darren Clarke was best of the Irish in sixth place on 16 under par, while David Higgins and Padraig Harrington finished on 11 under.

Yesterday’s win means Goosen has become the first non-European to win the European Order of Merit since Greg Norman in 1982. He has also moved into the world’s top 10 for the first time in his career.
