Darren Clarke had his lowest European tour round for nearly four months today and then prepared to congratulate Retief Goosen on becoming Europe’s number one this season.

A six-under-par 65 from the Ulsterman at the Telefonica Madrid Open was not enough to knock Goosen off course in his pursuit of a title which will wrap up the Order of Merit race in the best possible manner.
