Padraig Harrington’s fondness for the Club de Campo course was apparent again today when he opened his defence of the Telefonica Madrid Open title with a record-equalling 63.

The Dubliner, seven times a runner-up this season, also won the 1996 Spanish Open at the course and a brilliant run around the turn put him back in his familiar position at the top of the leaderboard.
