Golf: Davis grabs share of lead of Dunhill Links Championship

Brian Davis gave himself the chance to turn a mediocre season into a fantastic one when he took a share of the lead in the Dunhill Links championship.

Davis was among 44 players held up by fog at Kingsbarns, one of the three courses being used for the pro-am event, for the second day running.

But when conditions improved Davis added birdies on the 16th and 18th for a seven under par 65 which put alongside South African Ernie Els and Omar Sandys.

Having finished 29th on the European Order of Merit last year, capturing his first title in the Spanish Open and representing England in the World Cup, Davis is only 90th on this season's money list and has not had even a top-20 finish since April.

Because of the hold-ups he had only an hour's break before he was back in action at the Old Course in St Andrews.

He lost all his three games in that, though, and so did England to finish with the wooden spoon in their group.

Sandys was the first of the leaders to tee off in the second round.

His 65 had come at St Andrews and he switched to Carnoustie, but although he birdied his third hole - actually the long 12th - he had bogeys either side of that and so slipped to six under.
