Golf: Further fog delays for Dunhill Championship

The Dunhill Links Championship has run into further problems with the weather.

The Dunhill Links Championship has run into further problems with the weather.

Britain's richest ever golf event was unable to complete its first round yesterday because of fog and it was the same situation that caused the further delay today.

Only 16 of the 104 players - 52 professionals each with an amateur partner - had finished their opening rounds overnight at Kingsbarns, one of the three courses being used for the £3.5m tournament.

The others were due to resume at 8.00am to finish off before making the short trip to St Andrews for their scheduled second rounds - but it already seemed likely that the halfway point would not be reached until tomorrow.

Among those affected were English pair David Howell and Brian Davis, both five under par with two and three holes to play respectively, which left them only two behind South African leaders Ernie Els and Omar Sandys in the chase for the first prize of just over £551,000.
