Golf: Further announcements expected on Ryder Cup

Europe’s Ryder Cup Board are expected to make an announcement shortly on all matters relating to the postponement of the match until 2002.

‘‘We will be addressing all relevant issues, ranging from ticketing to the timing of future matches,’’ said Ryder Cup director Richard Hills.

One suggestion is that after next year’s match the competition will adjust into a new two-year cycle, with the match scheduled for the K Club in Ireland for 2005 therefore switching to 2006.

‘‘It’s too early to determine whether that will happen,’’ added Hills. ‘‘We are in the process of finalising the date (for next year) and hope to make an official announcement late afternoon tomorrow.

‘‘We are also in the process of putting detail to the many aspects of the matches, which by definition are complex, that require immediate action and we will also hope to make further announcements on specific arrangements in the next several days.’’

No date has yet been set for the announcement of the venue for the 2009 match, where the bidding process has just been completed involving Celtic Manor in Wales, Slaley Hall near Newcastle and four Scottish courses - Gleneagles, Turnberry, Loch Lomond and Carnoustie.
