Golf: Coltart makes early move
Andrew Coltart swiftly moved back into a share of second place when the United States PGA championship resumed at the Atlanta Athletic Club today.
After two solid opening pars Coltart birdied the long 12th - his third - to return to four under par, two behind shock overnight leader Grante Waite.
There was a good start too from the Scot’s brother-in-law Lee Westwood, who improved to level par with a three at the 430-yard first.
But Ian Woosnam, also one over overnight, bogeyed the second and as a result was right on the likely cut-off mark following the second round.
For Coltart the tournament has huge importance. He is 13th in the Ryder Cup table and he really wants to climb into an automatic top 10 spot two years after controversially being given a wild card by Mark James and then being left out until the singles.
For American Bruce Zabriski, however, there was something far more important going on in his life at the moment.
Five weeks ago his wife gave birth to a daughter Clara, but she came into the world without a right ventricle to her heart.
‘‘The stress level is pretty high around the house, but my wife basically kicked me out saying that playing this week will be good for me and good for her.
‘‘I made my mind up on Saturday and once I had I was OK.’’
And Zabriski even opened with a one under par 69 to be well in the hunt.
