They are Henrik Bjornstad, Massimo Scarpa, Mikael Campbell, Mikael Lundberg and Maarten Lefeber.

Leading the Irish challenge is Darren Clarke, who is one shot behind the leaders after a four-birdie and a bogey-free round of 68.

Four other players including Colin Montgomerie, winner of last week's Irish Open are also on 68, with Clarke and Montgomerie now the joint favourites to win outright.

Defending champion Lee Westwood, attempting to complete a hat-0trick of wins in the Smurfit European Open is ion 71 after the first round.

Best of the Irish behind Clarke is Padraig Harrington, who is at two under par while recently-crowned US Masters champions Retief Goosen is three under.

Londoner Anthony Wall, who finished with a level par 72, carded a hole-in-one at the 13th where he put his four iron tee-shot into the cup from 209 yards.
