New Zealand's Michael Campbell has emerged as the early leader on the opening day of the German Open at Heidelburg.

New Zealand's Michael Campbell has emerged as the early leader on the opening day of the German Open at Heidelburg.

Campbell is on five under going into the back nine, one stroke ahead of Englishman Darren Lee, who is at the same stage.

Argentine Eduardo Romero is also on four under, but is two holes behind.

Paul McGinley is best of the Irish in joint eighth place on two under at the seventh hole, while Padraig Harrington is on par, also with seven played.

Des Smyth remains on par four holes into his round.

The Open has been delayed by persistent rain.
