Golf: Garcia given july date for hearing

Sergio Garcia will appear before the European Tour’s tournament committee in July over his show of temper at the Greg Norman Holden International in Sydney three months ago.

The Ryder Cup star reacted angrily to being penalised two strokes by the Tour’s chief referee John Paramor for a wrong drop.

Garcia, two ahead at the time, was clearly furious. He tried to tell Paramor that the rule was ambiguous and as they parted he twice hit a tree with a club and then hit a buggy with it as well.

Hardly able to contain his anger he then said: ‘‘Hopefully, even with John Paramor’s rules and everything, I will be able to win the tournament.’’

When he lost a play-off to Australian teenager Aaron Baddeley the next day he further commented: ‘‘Somebody didn’t want me to win and he did it.’’

The incident was first discussed by the Tour’s tournament committee in Dubai three weeks later, but he was not there and his request for a personal hearing to clarify his position was granted.

That was expected to take place either at today’s meeting in Germany or at the Volvo PGA championship at Wentworth next week. But the 21-year-old is not playing in either tournament and now the matter has been held over to the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond.
