I’ve been playing nicely tee to green for the past six weeks. I wouldn’t say I’ve been struggling with my putting but I certainly haven’t been holing as many as I should have, missed a few short ones and it’s definitely been something that’s holding me back a little bit. I’ve been shooting one under when it should have been five under, things like that.
“So it’s been nice to putt a little better this week.
Oh definitely. Not having to travel too far, just drive down the road; good preparation and it’s definitely nice to be playing in your home country.
“Rest up, chill out, cook some dinner. It’s chilli con carne tonight. Henry (Tomlinson)’s my caddie-slash-chef this week is cooking tonight! We went to college together, and lived together for a couple of years, played on the team together and stuff. It’s nice to have someone to travel with.
“For me it’s been really important to have a caddie, just to have that company. It makes things a little easier, especially on a rainy day like we had this week, it’s going to save you a few strokes having a caddie to keep your clubs dry. So it’s worth paying the extra few quid! There are guys out here pulling their own bag and it can be a lonely 18 holes so it’s nice to have someone you know and you can chat to.”
“Exactly, not just during your round. We room together and it’s nice to have a bit of company, have a chat, chill out, because you can get very lonely very easily.”
Yeah, we’re all in the one house. Myself, Henry, Gary, Rory, Stuart and his caddie so it’s a bit of a Big Brother house all right.
It’s nice to share a house with the guys, cooking your own food, chatting not just about golf but talk about other things and get away from it as well. It’s always nice to share with your mates, you know.
We’re all looking forward to the Man United-City game and Celtic and Rangers. There’s plenty going on. I’m a United fan and so is Gary and Henry as well. No City fans anyway, there’ll be a few screams.
Yeah, it was a little clip I did for my sponsors Flogas earlier in the week. I was cooking a Thai Green Curry and they asked me a question about cooking. It’s for a show they are sponsoring so I think they’ll be showing me stirring the pot.
It was a little different but my sponsors have been really good to me and it’s great to have them helping out financially because you do need a lift when you’re starting out.
And they’ve taken me to a few concerts and it’s been a little bit more than just helping out financially.
I have a good relationship with them (his sponsors) and (managing director) John Rooney and they have a few other ambassadors like (fellow golf pro and commentator) Gary Murphy and we all communicate with each other, we’ve got a group chat for Flogas ambassadors. I know Gary and there’s a good support network there.
The last one I went to was Muse at the 3 Arena in Dublin. They were okay but not really my cup of tea. And I actually have tickets for Justin Bieber but I don’t think he’s my cup of tea either!
I like all different kinds of music, mellow usually but it depends what mood I’m in. I actually like practising listening to rap music and hip hop, Eminem and those sorts of guys. It all helps.”
