Kinsale Golf Club’s junior golfers may be making their mark in the amateur game but the Cork club has plenty of other reasons to celebrate, says president Declan Murphy.

Cathal Butler’s Munster Stroke Play Championship victory at Cork Golf Club last Sunday was the latest success for Kinsale GC.

It celebrated its centenary in 2012 and is this year marking 21 years at their present location in Farrangalway with a 10-week long Summer Series of Golf, in association with Macdonald Kinsale Hotel and Spa.

The competition is an open three-man team event running for 10 consecutive Fridays from this month through to August, with the winning team from each qualifier going forward to a grand final around August 19.

“It’s a new competition to celebrate our 21st anniversary of moving from Ringenane and we’re inviting as many golfers from as many clubs as possible to enter a team,” Murphy said.

“It was a great year for us in 2012, our centenary year and we hosted the national cups and shields finals for the GUI and won the Munster club of the year award, which was a very prestigious honour.

“We’ve new practice facilities with chipping and putting practive greens, two licenced PGA professionals in Ger Borderick and Ian Stafford, we’ve maintained our membership and our junior section is absolutely booming, with three Irish representatives in Cathal Butler, Gary Ward, and John Murphy.

“The ladies’ side of the club have commenced the ‘Get Into Golf’ programme which has done phenomenally well, with more than 60 people at their inaugural meeting.”

Not that Kinsale GC will turn their back on any visitors who come their way, Murphy added.

“Sometimes in Kinsale we’re in the shadow of the Old Head with visitors, they come in to play Old Head.

“Sometimes we get some kickback from that but with the amount of yearly visitors into Kinsale we’re trying to encourage them into the club with our facilities and more open competitions throughout the week and at weekends.

“There’s nothing like getting a card in your hand, even if you’re just in Kinsale for the weekend.”
