To have an amateur leading The Open Championship going into today’s final round is the stuff of fairytales.

That he is an Irishman makes it a piece of pure fantasy.

Yet that is the situation for 22-year-old Paul Dunne at St Andrews today, the golfer from Greystones just 18 Old Course holes from placing his name alongside the great Bobby Jones as an amateur winner of the game’s oldest major.
