A happy ending — with a little help from our good selves

There was a happy ending at Mahon GC last Wednesday for Jerry Quirke and Miko O’Grady, with a little help from the Irish Examiner.

A happy ending — with a little help from our good selves

On May 5, a small article told the story of Miko, from Mitchelstown, who had discovered what he thought to be the back plate of a wristwatch while playing in Mahon last August.

As the disc featured an inscription – “To Jer, Happy 70th, Love and Best Wishes, Donie and Mary” – he was eager to return it to its owner, but various avenues proved fruitless. However, after the piece in the paper, Sharon Quirke got in touch as she felt it might belong to her father-in-law Jerry.

So it proved and the two men met at the South Munster Open Seniors event in Mahon last Wednesday.

“Having finished playing, Jerry and I met up,” Miko said, “and it was with great pleasure for me to return his lost, and very special back plate of his watch.

“He told me that he had gone back tracing his steps, to places where he had been, not knowing where he lost it. It certainly has a happy ending.”
