Eagle-eyed Miko looks to find ‘Jer’

If your name is Jer and you were playing golf in Mahon on August 20 last year and lost a precious keepsake, Miko O’Connell may be about to make your day.

Eagle-eyed Miko looks to find ‘Jer’

Miko, a member of Mitchelstown GC, was competing in the South Munster Seniors Open on that day and noticed a shiny object as he walked up the hill on the first hole at the Cork city course.

It turned out to be a metal disc, which Miko reckons to be the back of a watch. On the circumference is the inscription, ā€˜To Jer, Happy 70th, Love and Best Wishes, Donie and Mary’, while in the centre it reads ā€˜10-8-1940, Aged to Perfection, 10-8-2010’.

ā€œAs Mahon is a municipal course, there was no clubhouse as such in which to leave it,ā€ Miko explains.

ā€œIt was an open competition so there’s no guarantee that the person was from Mahon. I was talking to one of the organisers that day and there is a bar there but I was afraid that it might get mislaid so I decided to hang onto it.

ā€œIt’s obviously of great sentimental value and precious to whoever had it. I’d love to pass it on to man that lost it, I really would.ā€

Miko is a regular on the senior golf circuit and expects to be playing in Mahon again on June 3, which he hopes will allow him to return the disc.

ā€œI’ve put it in my wallet so that I’ll be sure to remember it. I wouldn’t mind if I had to travel to return it, it’d just be great to get it back to the owner. Hopefully this will raise enough awareness.ā€
