With a late start to his first round on Thursday and early tee time for his second round yesterday, the in-form Irishman figured he would be set fair to perhaps improve on his best major championship finish of a tie for ninth place at last month’s Open Championship.

Imagine his dismay, then, when having completed part one by opening with a three-under-par 68 he arrived at Valhalla’s first tee to get the championship under way on day two and could barely see the first green through black-skied downpour in front of his eyes.
