Pádraig Harrington went into the weekend of the Irish Open admitting he badly needed momentum and to feel seriously nervous coming down the stretch in the final round.

“If I am not, he accepted, “I won’t be winning the Irish Open.”

Sadly, from the time he dunked his tee shot into the pond at the short third, in Saturday’s third round, he wasn’t touched by either emotion and at the end of 72 holes he was back in a share of 14th place after a final round 69 left him eight under, albeit a very manageable five shots behind wire-to-wire winner Mikko Ilonen.
