Janzen hunts old form at True South Classic

The focus of the vast majority of the golfing world may be on the Open Championship instead of the True South Classic, but this week’s PGA Tour event can at least boast four major champions in the field.

Double US Open champion Lee Janzen is among the players contesting the $3m (€2.4m) prize pool at Annandale Golf Club, having not played in the British Open since 2003, 10 years after his first US Open triumph at Baltusrol.

The 47-year-old has not won an individual tournament since his second US Open victory in 1998 at Olympic Club in San Francisco — which recently hosted this year’s event — slumping to 354th in the world rankings.

He has also failed to regain his full US Tour card at the qualifying school in each of the last two years, but comes into the event in decent form having finished eighth in last week’s John Deere Classic.

The other major winners in Mississippi are 2003 Masters champion Mike Weir, 1996 US PGA winner Mark Brooks and 2003 US PGA champion Shaun Micheel, but South African Brendon de Jonge will start as the favourite. De Jonge has finished in the top 15 on his last two appearances at Annandale, including a tie for third in 2010. He has also made the cut in 13 consecutive tournaments, with 12 of his last 15 rounds being under 70.

Chris Kirk is defending champion but has recorded just two top-20 finishes this season having taken five weeks off earlier in the year after becoming a father for the first time.
